REFLECTIVE ANALYSIS
canCompetency 1
I achieve this first competency by including a variety of topics in my projects (linked with reality and facts; Olympics, politics, sports, novel prize, etc.). I attempt to awake student's curiosity and to share knowledge through projects and discussions. On my side, I am always aware of culture around the world and I try to be as updated as I am possibly able to be.
Competency 2
I strictly use English during my learning situations. I use professional language in all my oral and written communications. My voice adequately flows to all types of situations. I pronounce words clearly and I am very expressive and nuanced in the way I express myself. I have an English ONLY Zone!!! This zone allows students to speak English at all time in the class. If they can express themselves in English, then they have the hallway to do so in French. This is allowed only under specific circumstances. I also work with different strategies and/or resources to maximize the use of English in class. Of course, the various papers I wrote to maximize the use of English in class. Finally, I do my best to adapt my English level to students' level.
Competency 3
When creating projects, I specify my educational intentions and I select learning competencies to be worked on (CCC). I provided a meaningful context (BAL) to the project for the students. The learning evaluation situations are adapted to students' interest and level of English. I am always prepared and in control of the learning situation that I create. I never neglect classroom management, time management, and material management. I try to anticipate all possible difficulties that students may encounter. I try a variety of approaches in order to maintain the students' attention. I make good use of visuals, which I consider the key of success when teaching a second language.
Competency 4
This competence refers my teaching skills when teaching different learning situations. I take my teacher role importantly and I tend to teach in an animated way with rhythm and dynamism. I always model the language to give them a point of reference and help them understand. I constantly stare at the class to have the best peripheral vision. I give clear goals and make sure that students understand the task I requested. At all times, I encourage, support, and congratulate the students to give them a good support with their learning. I show confidence in front of the class to put student at ease.
Competency 5
I kept records of each student's score for all three competencies. I constantly evaluate their progress in C1, as they are often in interaction. I use recurrent quiz (oral & written) in order to verify he students’ understanding of the new material and if their retention is accurate. It also helps them to notice what is important to know and what can be evaluated at end. I also create my own rubrics based on the MELS criterion. I follow students' progress by entering all their grades on the school portal. This allows me to keep close records of students with an effective ongoing evaluation of all competencies. Finally, I try (and find very important) to involve parents in evaluation and learning process.
Competency 6
I manage my class with firmness, consistency using routines, and coherence. I understand my role of authority in a democratic way as an English teacher. My non-verbal communication helps for the classroom management. I also use leadership to rally all students in a democratic way. The best way I found to prevent disruption is to anticipate questions and issues attached to the students' learning.
Competency 7
I tried to identify struggling students and to demonstrate differentiation. By identifying the difficulties of each student, I am able to intervene adequately and appropriately to their needs. This helps me adapt my teaching and my material to their specific needs.
Competency 8
I know plenty of opportunities to use ICTs, I have the knowledge and capacity of ICTs and I use them appropriately and in an adapted way. I use ICTs when it is appropriate to do so. I create all of my material with different software. Mac Software, Microsoft Software, Office Suit: Excel, Word, Power Point, Outlook. Hence, it is up to date and convivial for the students.
Competency 9
I understand my role as a teacher. I am always ready to help colleagues of my school and those of the school board. I am also always asking for help if I’m in need. I try to be actively involved in the student’s progress or behavior follow-up. I bring constructive and relevant comments to my colleagues and the parents concerned. I respect the educational values conveyed by the MELS, the school boards, the schools, and the other teachers.
Competency 10
I actively participated in several educational events, such as CPE, CE, CPEE during my practicums. I also had the chance to participate in two intervention plans. For this purpose, I met with school professionals, the school director, and the parents of the children concerned. On a professional level, I attended to two days of training as a teacher of English as a second language. These two days were as such very resourceful and helpful. I demonstrated an open mind to all these meetings and school activities and implications.
Competency 11
The trainings that I had the chance to participate through my degree taught me and made me think on my personal and collective approach as a teacher. I am a person who receives criticism very well. That is, I listen to every comment constructively. I am capable to identify quickly what needs to be improved. I try to find effective solutions to reinvest the result of my thinking. This reflection is done before, during, and after the action, which slowly becomes a professional habit. I also started substitute teaching, which counts for an ongoing development as a teacher because I learn new ideas and ways every day.
Competency 12
My confidence greatly helps me to act ethically and responsibly, I show a sense of responsibility at all time. I also have confidence in the students’ potential, which motivates them and encourages them to learn. I am always professional, I am not passing any judgments, I am fair to all students (no favoritism, nor discrimination), I am in a position where I have to keep the information confidential (except for a major problems), I am punctual and respect deadlines of all kinds.
